AMETHYST
The name Amethyst is derived from the Greek word amethystos, meaning "not drunk", as it was believed that by wearing the crystal one was protected from the effects of alcohol.
Amethyst Cathedrals are Geodes that have been cut in half and had the faces highly polished. Each Geode is uniquely shaped by nature over millions of years. These high quality Amethyst Geodes are only found along the Brazilian - Uruguay border of South America. Each Geode started out as a gas bubble in a magmatic flow. In the following epoch, ground water would slowly permeate the cavity, depositing its dissolved minerals, slowly enough for the dissolved minerals to assemble into their unique crystal forms.
Amethyst Crystals are six-sided hexagonal prisms usually ending into a very defined point. A quartz crystal displaying violet color tones is considered Amethyst. The coloring is due to traces of iron and manganese minerals.
